EKA Mobility has launched Zanzibar’s first electric bus fleet, with the initial vehicles officially flagged off by Zanzibar President Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi ahead of the start of commercial operations on 1 August.
The deployment introduces EKA’s 12-metre electric buses to the island as part of the development of a new public transport network focused on lower-emission mobility.
The launch represents another step in EKA Mobility’s international expansion. Further vehicle deployments are planned following the initial rollout. In total, the company will supply 35 electric buses to support the island’s transition to zero-emission public transport.
Alongside supplying the buses, EKA said the partnership is intended to support the development of a local electric mobility ecosystem. This includes creating employment opportunities and building technical skills to support the operation and maintenance of the fleet.

The buses have been manufactured in India as part of its strategy to expand exports of electric mobility technology to international markets.
