Pace Suburban Bus has introduced 24 new hybrid-electric buses into service in Will County, Illinois, as part of the agency’s ongoing fleet modernisation programme.

The new vehicles form part of Pace’s wider Project Zero initiative, which aims to transition the agency’s entire fleet to zero-emission vehicles by 2040. The hybrid buses are expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fuel consumption while providing quieter operation and improved ride comfort for passengers.

The Will County deployment represents the latest phase of a broader rollout across Pace’s service area. Additional hybrid-electric buses are scheduled to enter service at other Pace facilities later this summer.

Speaking at the launch event in Joliet, Pace Director John Noak said:

This investment reflects Pace’s responsibility to balance innovation with reliability. Hybrid buses allow us to move forward in a thoughtful, responsible way today while we continue building the infrastructure and securing the resources needed for full electrification in the years ahead. They provide cleaner, quieter, more efficient service for our riders and communities right now.

The hybrid vehicles are expected to reduce fuel costs by around 20% annually compared with conventional diesel buses. The agency said the savings would support its focus on operational efficiency and long-term financial sustainability.

The fleet expansion coincides with broader service improvements across the region. Recent state transit funding has enabled the agency to increase services in several areas, including evening and weekend operations.

Project Zero includes investments in vehicles, facilities, workforce training and charging infrastructure as Pace works towards its goal of operating a fully zero-emission fleet by 2040.
