Mississauga Transit (MiWay) has awarded New Flyer Industries Canada (NFI) a two-year contract for 127 Xcelsior® forty-foot hybrid-electric buses and 38 Xcelsior sixty-foot hybrid-electric buses.

Hybrid-electric buses bridge the transition between combustion engines and zero-emission propulsion. They reduce NOx emissions by up to 50 percent and particulate matter levels by up to 100 percent, while also lowering fuel and maintenance costs.

NFI will equip all 165 hybrid-electric buses with a Modular Accessory Power System (MAPS) that offers a multi-functional and lightweight design. The buses will also be configured with geofencing technology to define the transit route sections where the hybrid-electric buses will operate in electric vehicle mode.

The low-emission hybrid-electric Xcelsior® buses will deliver increased fleet efficiency, reliability and sustainability
Chris Stoddart, President, North American Bus and Coach, said:

NFI has been leading hybrid-electric innovation for over 20 years, supplying more hybrid-electric buses across North America than any other manufacturer. Our partnership with MiWay spans 45 years, having delivered 550 buses since 1976. Today, we continue to support MiWay in its transition to cleaner transportation by leveraging hybrid-electric mobility that will immediately reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the greater Mississauga community.

MiWay operates 500 buses and delivers over 55 million annual rides in Mississauga, Ontario. This recent order contributes towards their 40-year Strategic Plan, which is focused on expanding their transit system in an environmentally-responsible manner to reduce emissions and improve air quality within a transit-oriented city.
