The U.S. Department of Transportation (US DOT) has announced the availability of 610 million USD in federal funding to support investment in bus fleets and related infrastructure across the US.
The funding, made available through the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), is being offered under the Grants for Buses and Bus Facilities Infrastructure Program and the Low or No Emission Grant Program.
Approximately 21 million USD will be available to help transit agencies purchase, lease or rehabilitate buses and vans, as well as construct or improve bus maintenance and operating facilities.
A further 589 million USD has been allocated to support the purchase or lease of low-emission and zero-emission buses, associated equipment and charging or fuelling infrastructure.
Notably, the FTA said it intends to give priority to low-emission projects over zero-emission proposals where permitted under existing legislation.
The announcement forms part of the US DOT’s latest funding round for public transport infrastructure. The department said revised grant criteria are intended to place greater emphasis on projects that support families using public transport.

Transit agencies wishing to apply for funding must submit eligible projects by 21 September 2026, with applications being assessed under the criteria set out in the Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO).
