Zurich City Council has officially approved funding for the purchase of a set of eight standard electric buses and twelve articulated electric buses from Yutong France & Daimler Buses Switzerland.
Set to enter service mid-2027; the vehicles will join VBZ’s existing fleet of around 250 buses, all of which are required to be replaced once they reach the end of their technical lifespan.
The introduction of the new buses is intended to align with the city and canton of Zurich’s intentions to operate a totally electrified public transport system.
Thus far, the city council has approved expenditure of approximately 17 million CHF for the procurement of eight standard buses from Yutong France and twelve articulated electric buses from Daimler Buses Switzerland, with the initial order also including options for additional vehicles from either supplier at a later date.
VBZ has stated that it will not be choosing to exercise option activations with its current electric vehicle contractors, Hess, due to poor quality, instead opting to prioritise the procurement of new models.
