Bus importer BasiGo has announced a new contract to deliver 28 new electric buses for operation within Rwanda, with the first batch of vehicles set to debut in Kigali in April.

The new buses are set to operate on both city and inter-city routes, following a commitment made by BasiGo to deploy 100 electric buses within the country before the end of 2025.

BasiGo launched its first electric bus pilot in the country in December 2023

Thus far, the company, which launched its first Rwandan electric bus pilot in December 2023, has received more than 360 electric bus reservations from Rwandan bus operators looking to replace their existing diesel fleets.

In order to accommodate the slew of new electric buses hitting the streets; BasiGo has also stated an intention to expand its local charging infrastructure, as well as apply significant upgrades to its Rwandex charging and service depot, increasing its power capacity to 1MW to allow for the charging of up to 25 buses per night.

Companies looking to secure the new electric buses from BasiGo will be offered the chance to commit to the company’s Pay-As-You-Drive scheme, which allows customers access to charging, service, maintenance and insurance within BasiGo’s ecosystem in one package.

Jit Bhattacharya, CEO and Co-Founder at BasiGo, said:

BasiGo is proud to be delivering the largest shipment of electric buses to date into Rwanda.

Rwanda’s commitment to sustainable transport has created an ideal environment for private sector investment and innovation into E-mobility. With this first major shipment of electric buses, BasiGo is proud to help Rwanda take a major step towards the goal of universal, electrified public transport for the country.
