The City of Buenos Aires has issued a tender to acquire 20 electric trambuses, aiming to enhance mobility in the city and introduce more sustainable transport options.
These electric vehicles will serve as a new mode of public transit to improve connectivity and intermodality across the city.
Part of a broader strategy for decarbonising urban transport, they will complement a fleet of small electric buses set to operate in the city’s historic centre.
Head of Government, Jorge Macri said:With the Trambus we are improving accessibility and urban mobility: people will move around by using more sustainable vehicles. At the same time, we are working to connect areas of the City that need it today, as will happen in the Historic Center with electric buses.
The city is currently determining routes, stops, and infrastructure required for the new service.
Buenos Aires’ Minister of Infrastructure, Pablo Bereciartua said:How to improve the mobility of cities is one of the great challenges that cities have for the next few years and the important thing is to think of innovative and environmentally sustainable alternatives. The Trambus will mark a milestone in terms of mobility in Argentina.
Specifically, the tender calls for a fleet of 20 electric trambuses in two types: standard (75-85 passengers) and articulated (120+ passengers).
They will travel at speeds of up to 20 km/h and will feature a tram-like design that will be aerodynamic, safe, and quiet.
