Motor Coach Industries (MCI) is to supply 92 D45 CRT commuter coaches to New York City Transit (NYCT) for use on express bus services.

The contract, announced by MCI parent company NFI Group on 6 October 2026, will see the new coaches replace older vehicles currently operating on New York City’s express bus routes.

The purchase is being supported by funding from New York State, local sources and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA).

The D45 CRT is designed for commuter and express bus operations. The coach is intended for higher-capacity services and features a configuration developed for longer-distance transit operations.

The 92 vehicles will form part of NYCT’s fleet renewal programme, replacing ageing coaches used to provide express connections across the city.

Rob Marion, President of MCI, said:

New York City Transit plays a vital role in connecting communities of the world’s largest and most dynamic metropolitan regions. We are proud to continue our longstanding partnership with NYCT and the broader MTA family by delivering high-quality commuter coaches that will enhance the customer experience and support consistent express bus service for riders. This investment reflects NYCT’s continued commitment to modernising its fleet and providing safe, comfortable transportation for the millions of riders who depend on public transit every day.

NYCT is part of the MTA, which operates bus, subway and commuter rail services across the New York metropolitan region. The MTA serves a population of approximately 15.3 million across New York City, Long Island, southeastern New York State and Connecticut. Its network includes the largest bus fleet in the US.

The latest order follows MCI’s existing supply relationship with NYCT and adds 92 coaches to NFI’s order backlog.
