Frankfurt’s public transport company, In-der-City-Bus (ICB) has placed an order for ten hydrogen-powered Urbino buses from Solaris.

These new vehicles will be delivered in the first quarter of 2024 and will join the 13 Urbino hydrogen vehicles that have been operating in the city since 2022.

The operator also intends to launch its own hydrogen refuelling station in Frankfurt by the middle of this year as part of its mission to decarbonise its buses at the tailpipe by the early 2030s.

The vehicles will run on hydrogen fuel cells, producing only heat and water vapor as by-products

The newly ordered buses will be equipped with hydrogen fuel cells to generate electricity through reverse electrolysis and power two electric motors.

Each of the vehicles will also be equipped with an additional battery to store energy for times of high demand.

Furthermore, the Solaris Urbino 12 hydrogen buses will feature several ADAS solutions to support the driver, including the MirrorEye camera system in place of side mirrors.

The total value of this order is approximately 6.5 million EUR.
