The Government of Malta has announced a 14 million EUR investment into a set of 40 new electric Tallinja buses.

Introduction of the new vehicles forms part of the Malta in Motion plan, which aims to accelerate the country’s shift towards a modern, sustainable and efficient mobility system.

€14 million has been invested in the introduction of new electric buses

All buses will further expand Tallinja’s existing electric fleet and support the public transport operator’s aim of providing a fully electric fleet across Gozo.

Meanwhile, a new collaboration between the Ministry for Transport, Malta Public Transport and the University of Malta will see the beginning of a pilot project for an autonomous electric shuttle,  which has been co-financed by the European Union under the Horizon Europe programme.

The autonomous vehicle is capable of carrying up to 15 passengers, and will soon enter a six month testing period on selected routes in Malta and Gozo.

Initial operations will include the involvement of a trained operator, who will remain on board at all times and be able to take control wherever necessary.
