The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) is preparing to open the Scarborough Busway on 30 September, providing a dedicated bus connection between Kennedy and Ellesmere stations.
The four-kilometre Busway is being delivered along part of the former Line 3 Scarborough RT corridor and is expected to open more than six months ahead of the original projected date.
Once services begin, multiple TTC bus routes will use the Busway to provide frequent express services and accommodate passenger demand previously served by Line 3 trains.
The TTC expects to begin full testing in early September to identify and address any issues before the start of passenger services.
The Busway will begin at Kennedy Station and include stops at Tara Avenue/Mooregate Avenue, Lawrence East Station and Ellesmere Station. Buses will then use priority bus infrastructure on Ellesmere Road to continue towards Scarborough Town Centre.
Journeys between Kennedy Station and Scarborough Centre Station should take approximately 15 minutes.
The new route will replace the interim arrangements introduced following the closure of Line 3 in November 2023. Since then, the TTC has operated a bus replacement service with transit priority measures.
Mayor Olivia Chow said:Scarborough residents are getting faster, more affordable transit. By September 30, more than 118,000 riders each week will save over an hour travelling on the speedy Busway. With fare capping also coming into effect in September, the more you ride, the less you pay. Most evenings and weekends will be free for people who work five days a week and take the TTC.
The TTC estimates that more than 118,000 passengers will use the Busway each week.
