HESS has received a contract from VBZ to supply 26 battery-powered trolleybuses for use in Zurich, Switzerland.

The order consists of 13 articulated battery-powered trolleybuses and 13 HESS lighTram bi-articulated battery-powered trolleybuses.

HESS Trolleybuses
The new HESS lighTram buses will be running on VBZ routes from 2024

This contract is valued at approximately 330 million Swiss francs (334 million EUR) and includes the preventive maintenance of the vehicles.

The new vehicles are more energy efficient than previous models and will allow for more routes in Zürich to operate on electricity rather than diesel.

Alongside reducing carbon emissions and improving air quality, this transition will save time spent refuelling the buses, as their batteries will be recharged throughout the journey using the city’s existing overhead lines.

The new trolleybuses will also feature a modern design to increase the attractiveness of public road transport and optimise the efficient flow of passengers.

In the future, the transport operator plans to order a further 140 vehicles to fully replace its fleet of trolleybuses.
